---
At t2, we’re continuing to trail-blaze the future of social writing experience for the modern digital age of publishing. A year after launching Territories V1, we've redesigned the entire experience with Territories V2.
Welcome to Territories V2
Territories V2 improves drastically three key areas based on user insights:
1) Custom Permissions & Roles
Each Membership Role has a unique set of permissions that can be adjusted by Admins, and completely customizable role titles, images, colors, and digital collectibles.
2) Monetization of Territories
The monetization of Territories through subscription-based memberships and a co-earning rewards system that distributes Territory earnings monthly based on accumulated Time Points. Learn more about Territory monetization here.
3) Re-imagined content exploration experience
The Territory Homepage has been completely redesigned from the ground up for a more extensive content exploration experience. Read more about our Territory Homepage redesign from our product designer, Rachel Chak.
In this post, we’ll provide detailed documentation on:
- Creating a new Membership Role
- Editing an existing Membership Role
- Different types of Membership Role requirements
- Inviting users to a Membership Role
- Claiming a Membership Role
Creating a new Membership Role
To create a new membership role, make sure you’re currently the Admin of a Territory, or have a Membership Role with “Territory Management” permissions turned on. To become an Admin, either launch a new Territory or be invited by another Admin in an existing Territory.
Head to the Territory Settings page via the left panel dropdown on the Territory page, by clicking “Manage Territory”, and selecting the “Membership Roles” tab.
Click “Create New Role” to start a new Membership Role from scratch and customize it to your liking. Build out details like:
- Role names and role descriptions to help members understand their role in your Territory
- Permissions that allow certain members to post, earn rewards, and make changes to your Territory
- Requirements that must be fulfilled, with 4 options, including free, t.p. deposit, Set-Price, and Invite-Only
- Collectible image, which will be reflected in the digital collectibles in each member's wallet to represent the ownership of their Membership Role
Currently, users can create a maximum of 5 Membership Roles.
Once you’ve reviewed the details and confirmed the requirements, click “Publish New Role” to complete the process.
Thanks to our partners at Unlock Protocol, these custom roles are backed by blockchain-based collectibles, giving members a secure, verifiable sense of ownership. Unlock also ensures that your Territory’s roles are seamlessly linked to on-chain digital assets, elevating both the experience and value of membership.
Different Types of Membership Requirements
Currently, there are 4 different types of membership requirements that can be utilized for different purposes.
Free
Free memberships do not require any kind of payment, and are valid forever until cancellation. Like a free subscriber, the only requirement is the submission of a valid email for security and account management purposes. Usually, this would be the lowest tier of Membership Role that a Territory might have, with the least amount of permissions.
Time Points (t.p.)
Time Points deposits work the same as they did in Territories V1, where users make a one-time, refundable, deposit of t.p. in return for a Membership Role. Because t.p. is earned on t2 by reading and writing, depositing is an action of trust that de-incentivizes bad actors from joining Territories maliciously. These types of memberships are great for Admins who would like their members to earn their way into new Membership Roles, rather than paying.
Set-Price
Set-Price Membership Roles are just like paid subscriptions, and have a set price in $USDC (Base) along with a duration cycle (either monthly or annually). This is ideal for Admins who want to monetize their Territories and want to offer exclusive benefits to paying supporters.
Invite-Only
Invite-only Membership Roles cannot be claimed publicly. Users must be invited by an Admin (or another role with “Territory Management” permissions) to receive this type of role. This type of role requirement is great for Admins who want to limit access to certain Membership Roles, for example, moderator roles or writer roles that may be invite only.
Editing Roles
Head to the Territory Settings page via the left panel dropdown on the Territory page, by clicking “Manage Territory”, and select the “Membership Roles” tab.
Select the Membership Role you want to edit. At the time of writing (November 29, 2024), the following fields can be updated:
- Display
Role NameRole DescriptionFlair Color
- Role Name
- Role Description
- Flair Color
- Permissions
- Requirements
- Admins cannot change the type of requirement after the role has been created.
- Admins can change the t.p. required for a t.p.-based Membership Role.
- Admins cannot change the price of a set-price Membership Role.
- Collectible image
Previewing the Membership Role Selection page
Admins can also quickly preview the Membership Role Selection page by clicking on the “Preview” button at the top of the Membership Roles screen in Territory Settings.
This allows Admins to view the page as a potential member, allowing them to make adjustments to any details of how the roles are presented.
All roles, except Invite-Only Membership Roles, are publicly viewable on the Membership Role Selection page.
Inviting a Member
Admins can also invite a member to a specific Membership Role. This doesn’t just apply to Invite-Only roles, but all role types, meaning Admins can also invite someone to a Set-Price or t.p. role.
Head to the Territory Settings page via the left panel dropdown on the Territory page, by clicking “Manage Territory”, and select the “Membership Roles” tab.
Under the list of existing roles in the Territory, there is a dedicated “Invite Member” section. Select the role, set the expiration date of the membership, and fill in the wallet address of the recipient.
Any user with a valid wallet address can receive a Membership Role. Please note Membership Roles are issued on the Base network.
The recipient does not necessarily have to be a registered t2 user but will need to create an account to access the proper permissions within the Territory. Upon account creation, t2 will recognize the Membership Role Digital Collectible in the wallet, and automatically grant them the corresponding permissions and access to the Territory.
The account must be created with the wallet address that is currently holding the asset for it to be correctly recognized.
Claiming a Membership Role
To claim a Membership Role, head to the Territory you want to join, and click “Become a Member” on the left panel.
Select a Membership Role that works for you, and follow the steps.
Once successful, you’ll see a screen showing your digital collectible, the member number, and your new set of permissions in the Territory!
Payment Methods
At the time of writing (November 29, 2024), we only accept digital currency payments via $USDC on Base Network. We are working hard to expand payment options to credit/debit cards and more digital currencies in the near future.
Viewing Your Memberships
To view all Membership Roles, head to the “Community” tab, and click “Membership Roles”. You’ll see the roles that you currently have, as well as any other ones that are available for you to claim.
Membership Role Best Practices
While customization is great for the variety of purposes, there are some guidelines and best-practices that we suggest.
- Keep a free Membership Role. This helps anyone with a valid email become a member of your Territory, which is a great way to grow your member base.
- Have at least 1 Set-Price Membership Role. You never know who might become your patron!
- Maintain a clear set of content standards. Make it easy for newcomers to understand what to expect within your Territory, and they will be more likely to stay. The pin feature can be helpful to pin posts, such as community guidelines, to the top of the Territory homepage.
- Customize Membership Role name: Make the membership experience feel special!
- Consider turning on “Monetary Distribution” permissions: Enabling rewards sharing with your members to incentivize them to help you grow the Territory.
- Communicate changes to your members: Use announcement posts or other communication channels to communicate any changes to permissions to any Membership Roles.
Conclusion
With Territories V2, we’ve reimagined the way you can build, customize, and grow your communities. We hope these new features enhance your experience and give you the tools to make your Territories unique and engaging.
As always, your feedback is invaluable to us. If you have any thoughts, questions, or ideas for future improvements, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We’re excited to see how you use the new Membership Roles to create even richer, more dynamic spaces for your communities. Happy exploring!
