Ready for Summer!

Onchain Summer

Coinbase’s Base layer-2 network and Optimism are spearheading “Onchain Summer 2024” to accelerate blockchain mainstream adoption. Building on 2023’s success (over 700,000 mints from 268,000 wallets), this year features the Onchain Summer Buildathon — a hackathon with 200 ETH in prizes across gaming, payments, creators, and more tracks [7 days left to apply, the event ends at the end of June]. Optimism has allocated 600k OP tokens as incentives for eligible Superchain projects from June 3 to August 30.

The variety in layer-2 solutions is pivotal for bringing blockchain to the masses. In this endeavour, Lens Protocol’s decision to migrate from Polygon to zkSync carries significant implications for it’s scalability and usability. By leveraging zkSync’s zk-Rollup technology, Lens aims to harness the high throughput and low fees essential for accommodating its rapidly growing user base.

zkSync’s prowess in scaling, while preserving Ethereum’s security through zero-knowledge proofs, positions it as a compelling choice for applications demanding high performance. However, developer fatigue/wariness from migrations, and an ecosystem still finding its footing, poses hurdles.

Nonetheless, Lens’ transition underscores the ecosystem’s recognition that seamless, cost-effective scaling is crucial for onboarding mainstream users. As a major social platform, Lens’ ability to offer a smooth, scalable experience seeks to help catalyze broader blockchain adoption.

While contenders like Polygon boast stability and developer familiarity, zkSync’s tech aligns with the ethos of continuous innovation driving the space. This exemplifies the fluid landscape we’re in where solutions continually evolve based on project needs and advancements.

With a zksync airdrop expected soon, there will be burst of activity from the existing community (seeking avenues to make use of $ZK) that will serve as a bedrock for further onboarding. Ultimately, the path to scalability will likely continue to involve a diverse array of layer-2 solutions catering to varied use cases. As innovators like Lens prioritize scalability and usability, we inch closer to realizing the vision of seamless, decentralized transactions for all.

Give me a shout to work together on something for onchain summer!

1M $pointless to @kaitoren who isn't shy about being contrarian and sharing honest perspectives. Love it. Kaitoren.eth isn't a huge fan of the new orb logo (kind of agree), isn't sure about lens switching to zksync, from Polygon, and thinks its is a mistake (i am neutral). The view being devs should focus more on building new apps that can do things only possible on a web3 platform for mass adoption. Great news is he is putting his effort behind these views and building tooling around creating instagram-like grids for NFT collections: thegrid.eth
