These are my opinions, may ruffle your feathers- don’t read if you’re afraid of getting ruffled.
It’s been a while since I wrote about decentralized theatre. I have been living in two worlds for years. I don’t mention decentralized theatre often as it ruffles feathers and has people challenge my ideas and values, my understanding of the world around me.
I was born in 1960. Yes, I remember when the internet started. I can remember when Microsoft,Google , Apple , etc started and became what they are today.
I live in a centralized world. My social medias promoting Onboard60, ironically a project to teach senior citizens about decentralization and new tech, are on centralized platforms.
Are we there yet? No. Stop reading if you don’t want your feathers ruffled. We are not even close. These are my opinions and mine alone. I formed these opinions by experientially living through the creation of the internet.
I say we are living in times of decentralized theatre. The intention of creating and maintaining a decentralized system takes time , mistakes, and money, lots of money.
Where is the money coming from? It starts from you when you buy a token or a piece of artwork, an NFT. You fund the project, the community.
Over the years I have seen so many great projects that have grown into companies need the exposure, the financing and support go to V.C.s, private companies or as they’re called Web2.
This is when people challenge my ideas and my understanding of the world around me. I say we are in a Web2 world creating Web3.
I also say most of the so called decentralized protocols or social medias are not fully decentralized, they are building decentralized systems.
I am on Nostr which is definitely striving to grow and stay decentralized. ATProtocol or BluSky also building decentralized communities. Lens Chain moving forward also. The Graph, which can be considered the “Google” of Web3, as most protocols use them to build, recently went fully decentralized.
We live in a centralized world with components of decentralization. Some people have achieved financial independence from the centralized systems and some have not. In order for me to make ends meet I need to be in the centralized world.
I think most people do and that’s what I mean by decentralized theatre.The illusion that we are there is just that, an illusion.
It takes time to build an effective decentralized world, systems that are mainstream. Systems that are permissionless and trustworthy aren’t created overnight.
If you have been around the past few years, you have seen start ups come and go, people and communities were created and dissolved. Seemingly created overnight and lasted as long. Buckle up because it’s just the beginning. You will be a part of many projects and companies that won’t make it. Not everyone is gonna make it.
I don’t like saying we are early because we are not. We are in transition and where we end up may be a hybrid of centralized and decentralized. At least in my lifetime I say hybrid.
I do believe decentralization is possible and it will take big money to boost it - a lot. It’s the intention behind the money that matters. The process may suck and compromises will be many however if the vision and mission are clear, the end results will outweigh the struggles.
Onboard60’s vision and mission has stayed the same since the beginning. My methods of how I am able to achieve it are a compromise between centralized and decentralized communities and media.
I started by saying these are my thoughts, my opinions. I could be wrong. I apologize if you got ruffled.
