You pour your heart into your work, post it online, and... nothing happens. No likes, no shares, no engagement. Why does it feel like no one is seeing your art? I used to think the answer was "just post more," but that’s not the real issue. All the social media gurus talk about content pillars and posting times, but what does that actually mean for artists like you and me?

I’m still on this journey, figuring out the best ways to get seen and connect with an authentic audience. But with 23k followers across several platforms (which apparently makes me a "micro-influencer"—whatever that means), here are four things I’m focusing on in February to try and grow my reach.

The Real Problem: It’s Not Just About Posting More

Many artists assume that consistently posting will eventually lead to visibility. But without a clear strategy, posting alone isn’t enough. Here’s why:

  • No clear identity – Your work is great, but does your audience instantly recognize it as yours? With the rise of AI, generic content has an even shorter shelf life. People engage with creators they trust. So how do we stand out? By being human and authentic. You don’t have to share everything, but pick three things that define you and connect to your art in some way. These "pillars" invite viewers into your world. For me, it’s living and working in Tokyo, my background in musical theatre, and my passion for virtual fashion. I use these pillars to connect with others and as inspiration for my work.
  • Inconsistent presence – Showing up randomly makes it hard for people to engage with your work.I’m guilty of this one. Not being consistent hurts your reputation online. So I’m making it as simple as possible and gamifying it: show up at least once a day on a platform that inspires me, post something—anything—and repeat. Some days, it’s a quick tweet; other days, it’s a longer post like this one. The key is to keep showing up. It’s not easy. But neither is anything new. We both know the reward will be priceless as long as we just keep going.
  • No engagement strategy – Are you just posting and hoping for the best, or actively connecting with others? This is one of the most underrated tactics. If engaging with others doesn’t come naturally to you, here’s a simple system: Pick a time of day—maybe after lunch or in the evening—to open your preferred platform and interact with five people. Hype them up, leave a thoughtful comment, engage, or reshare their posts. To make it easy, save five accounts to a list or notes app. Keep doing this daily, and eventually, they may start engaging with you too. This builds community organically and helps your audience grow in an authentic way. It’s even better if you connect with people who have adjacent interests—it keeps interactions meaningful. Helpful tip? Using platforms like Firefly will allow you to crosspost to platforms like Lens, X/Twitter and Farcaster, meaning you can create one post, and have it distributed to all three platforms with one click. You can also check all your feeds from the app meaning you spend less time opening and closing tabs. This not only saves you time but also means less distractions. Post, engage and sign off all in one single motion!
  • Not optimizing your platforms – Bios, hashtags, and captions all play a role in discoverability. This should be a post of its own, but here’s a simple place to start: refine your bio so that it clearly communicates what kind of artist you are.

A New Perspective: Making Yourself Discoverable (With a Little Help from AI)

The artists who stand out aren’t always the most talented—they’re the ones who know how to position themselves. It’s not about selling out; it’s about being discoverable. A strong online presence makes it easier for fans, collectors, and collaborators to find you.

Building your brand takes time, but today, we have tools that can make the process faster and easier. And now, AI tools can help speed up and refine that process. Whether it’s using AI to generate engaging social media captions, improve portfolio presentation, or brainstorm content ideas, leveraging AI strategically can save time while keeping your brand authentic.

I use AI tools not just to optimize my bios and content but also to learn best practices and work more efficiently. With these new technologies, it’s easier than ever to develop new skills and turn them into superpowers—without spending hours searching for courses or mentors, especially when you’re just getting started.

Quick Fix: A Small Step to Boost Your Visibility

Here’s something you can do right now: rewrite your bio in a way that tells people exactly what kind of artist you are in one sentence. If you’re unsure how to phrase it, try using an AI writing tool like ChatGPT to generate ideas, then refine it to match your voice. Make it clear, engaging, and easy to understand. Then, drop it in the comments—I’d love to see how you describe yourself!
