When people think of cryptocurrencies, Bitcoin is often the first name that comes to mind. But Ethereum has carved out its own unique space by offering far more than just a digital currency. Ethereum, created in 2015, is a platform that enables developers to build decentralized applications (DApps) using smart contracts.
Smart contracts are self-executing agreements with terms directly written into code. They’ve been the foundation for the rise of DeFi (Decentralized Finance), NFTs (Non-Fungible Tokens), and even DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations).
Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, envisioned a blockchain that could be more than a digital ledger. At just 19 years old, he wrote Ethereum’s whitepaper, outlining a vision for a decentralized "world computer." Today, Ethereum powers thousands of projects and holds the second-largest market cap in the crypto space.
Fun Fact: Ethereum recently transitioned from a Proof-of-Work (PoW) to a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism in an upgrade called “The Merge,” reducing its energy consumption by over 99%. This makes Ethereum one of the most eco-friendly blockchains in existence.
