Young apprentices, called maiko, train for years in Kyoto’s famous Gion district before becoming full-fledged geiko. They wear stunning silk kimonos, intricate kanzashi hair ornaments, and traditional white makeup with red and black accents.
Unlike common misconceptions, geisha are not courtesans but performers of refined arts, entertaining guests at exclusive teahouses. Today, only a few hundred geisha remain, preserving Japan’s cultural heritage.
