The First Bitcoin Transaction Was for Pizza
When Bitcoin was first created, it had no market value. People exchanged it for fun, testing its functionality. That changed on May 22, 2010, when programmer Laszlo Hanyecz made history by using Bitcoin to purchase two pizzas. He paid 10,000 BTC, which at the time was worth about $40.
Fast forward to today, and those 10,000 BTC are now worth over $250 million, making it the most expensive pizza purchase in history. This moment is celebrated annually as Bitcoin Pizza Day, a reminder of how far the cryptocurrency world has come.
Hanyecz later reflected on the purchase, saying he didn’t regret it because it helped prove Bitcoin could be used in real-world transactions. And while he didn’t foresee Bitcoin’s meteoric rise, his story has become legendary in the crypto community.
Did you know? In 2018, Hanyecz made another "crypto pizza" purchase, but this time he used the Lightning Network to highlight Bitcoin’s scalability. History repeats itself, but this time with fewer zeros!
