The story is set in Lagos, Nigeria. The timezone is the 21st century, with a teenage main character. The families are mainly upper middle-class families. Specifically, in Lagos Island from Sangotedo, Ajah where Kelechi lives to Lekki Phase 1 where her father lives, and Ikoyi, where her school is located. Other locations include; church, Theodora’s house and her hiding place.

Setting One – Home

Kelechi and her mother live at Ajah, an upper middle-class suburb characterized by housing estates. Their estate, Marigold Estate is made up of identical semi-detached houses. The estate consists of well-paved maintained roads with a private park, which includes a sports arena, with a basketball field where Kelechi practices. Small grocery shops are also in the estate, Kelechi and her friends usually go to Aunty Gloria’s shop because they like her puff-puff.

The house is white with a black roof, and a brown metallic front door with a door bell and brass door knocker. On opening the front door, you see the main living room at your left and a staircase at the right. The living room consists of a complete living room suite, with the smart tv and chandelier.

Kelechi’s house

Also downstairs are the kitchen, visitor’s restroom, dining room and store. The dining table is made of glass, the legs are covered with black leather casings. The four chairs surrounding it are also made of black leather.

Upstairs is another living room, with a master bedroom for Kelechi’s mother and two smaller ensuite bedrooms, one for Kelechi, the other for guests. Kelechi spends most of her time in her room. The walls are blue, with baby pink curtains. The table is overflowing with textbooks, school notes and paperbacks. On her wall are posters of female basketballers and celebrities. Other furniture include the wardrobe for clothes and accessories, a full-length mirror and a queen-size bed.

The house styling is minimalistic, but elegant. The walls inside the house are also painted white, except for the kitchen and Kelechi’s room.

Other household appliances make up the house. The house is comfortable and warm, but not lived in. The furniture hardly needs cleaning as Kelechi’s mother is often at the shop or on work trips and Kelechi spends most of her time in her room.

Setting Two – School

Kelechi attends a day and boarding catholic secondary school located at Ikoyi. It is a large school, the school colors are blue and cream, which are the colors of most of the buildings. Kelechi’s class SS2, is located opposite the administrative block, up on the staircase. Kelechi spends most time in class, at the basketball field, the cafetaria where she sits with her friends during lunch.

Setting Three – Daddy’s house

Kelechi’s father lives in a five-bedroom duplex. His estate is more security conscious and extravagant than where Kelechi and her mother live. His house is tastefully furnished, with expensive furniture and gold and blue décor. Kelechi sees the house as a showroom for over the top wealth. She has one of the five bedrooms which she uses when she stays over.
