England is a key country within the United Kingdom, occupying the central and southern part of the island of Great Britain, surrounded by the waters of the North Sea and the Irish Sea. To the north, England borders with Scotland, and to the west, it borders with Wales.
The location of England is largely responsible for its climate and topographical features. The northern part of the country is dominated by mountains, the largest of which is Scafell Pike. In contrast, the eastern part is predominantly flat and suitable for agriculture.
Cool winds blowing from the sea bring frequent rain and unsettled weather to the island, and high humidity contributes to the accumulation of fog. Therefore, England, like Great Britain as a whole, is often referred to as «foggy Albion».
Despite the fact that its residents rarely see the sun, England is truly beautiful. With a rich historical past, it has retained an amazing spirit of old times. Magnificent medieval castles, the mysterious ancient structure of Stonehenge, Tower Bridge, Westminster Abbey, and the clock tower of the Palace of Westminster known as Big Ben are just a small part of the famous English landmarks.
Undoubtedly, most of them are concentrated in London, the capital of the United Kingdom. It is the largest city in the entire United Kingdom and is one of the leading cities in the world in terms of economic development.
The residence of the British government is also located in London. The city is also home to the main cultural attractions of the country, such as the British Museum, the National Gallery, the Tower of London, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Globe Theatre, the Royal Albert Hall, and others.
England is also known for its interesting traditions, such as having porridge for breakfast and daily tea drinking at five o’clock in the evening. Other traditions include playing cricket, the English tendency to joke even about serious things, and of course, the lavish celebration of Christmas, considered the main holiday of the year.
