Today, we're going to focus on wifeys and girlies of the world. This topic is also a courtesy of Wanshu and for this particular t/Trendslaytor article I had to move from TikTok to Urban Dictionary.
Wanshu's first asked whether people still say wifey. And honestly, do they? I was a bit confused because there are so many different definitions. But I think the one we're talking about here is just a nice way to describe your wife. This is a basic explanation but then it all depends on the context. It can be negative when used by men to refer to their partners in a patronising/condescending way. But it can also be one of the more personal ways to refer to your wife.
But then the word I love more is ✨girlie✨ - it's this word that you can use to describe yourself or others, and is used in an empowering and supporting context. And yeah, it has been overused a lot and if everyone is your girlie, then is anyone really?
But I also see it as an empowering word. People taking over the narrative and using it to describe female-related topics. And why not! If men can criticise girls and women for being too girly, then it's great that the female community is taking back the power.
Lastly, I am not going to lie I also enjoy that it might be confusing to some men. They're not in on some of the jokes and topics, and it's okay that they are not the centre of attention, for once.
