The morning bell hit her hard on her ears. Only the faintest bit of daylight peeking through her bedroom's window. Waking her up like this every morning for the past 20 years. Would today finally bring change? Change to these standard, boring days she thought?
Luna! Are you awake? Breakfast is almost ready, come downstairs ready and clean for the morning chores.
Luna washed her face and puts her clothes on. Closed her bedroom door, rounds the corner and darts down the stairs to the kitchen. Mother is finishing up omelettes when Luna walked in.
Good morning Mother.
Good morning Luna, breakfast is ready, wash your hands first please. Father sat at the head of the table. No changes so far.
Goodmorning Luna, tell me daughter what is today?
Direct as always, father. ‘Today, is the operation of Captain Kento father, Protector of Vilaar’s outside walls. He will arrive at 12:00 and should be finished by 18:00. Luna raised a little in her posture, showing how proud she was that she remembered not only the day but also the name and timeframe of the patient.
Yes it is, enough time for you to go to the market to get today’s supplies. Make sure you get everything. This surgery will take most of our supplies and we can’t be seen empty handed with the Baron of Viraal coming this Saturday. Stop by Orym’s workshop for some buckets and by Brevatto’s Apothecary for the medication and bandages, we’ll need new ones after today.
Be back after sunset, with the military presents around Captain Kento it’ll be busy enough here.
Yes Father, I’ll make sure of it. Wonderful, I have a reason to go to Orym and I need to stay out later, maybe change will come today.
Good girl, now clean up breakfast and clean yourself. Then head to the operation room, morning chorus of today’s rooms need to be faster than normal, only 2 hours until arrival.
Luna went to work; she cleaned up the dishes looking at mother already making lunch for the team of doctors that will come here today.
Grab some food before you head out, we will be in the front as soon as I am done here, Mother said. I Will be helping your father with the surgery.
Maybe this will bring the change I am looking for. If today goes smoothly then the Baron will come on Saturday. If father actually cured Lord Marquet, the Baron of Viraal. Then maybe change would come. Father would be accepted as Master of Medicine and we would elevate to the Capital of Viraal.
So really that means just more of the same in a bigger house, just like when we moved here to be able to operate in a clean environment instead of the slums back in Venta, the city of dust.
No if I really want change, I need to leave. I need to travel, into the world. There must be more out there than this. Passed the Wall of Lightning, if there even is another side. Yes… yes there is, there must be more than just this island.
‘I just want to explore more than just medicine. This Island is too small to live a whole lifetime on’ she once said.
Mother looked at her with horror, screaming at her how lucky she should feel being born into this wonderful life. Father gave her a thrashing she felt for weeks. She knew better now than to speak about it again. Lessons are on Mondays’ though. Today is Thursday, and that means cleaning.
After cleaning both the Operations room and the Recovery room, she started on all the utensils that will be used for today’s surgery. She cleaned herself and stepped outside after grabbing a piece of pie mother made. Once outside it was grey and bound for rain, seems the storms will come soon. The sun behind a thick pack of clouds, the smell of the sea already in the air.
Being the daughter of the famous surgeon family does have its advantages. She was awaited by a man with a simple cart with two horses pulling it. Step on up milady, we are going to Brevatto’s I assume? The man clipped his head to her as a form of respect. She humbly accepted and bowed a bit to him. It’s still early, change might come. Yes indeed Bren, and a stop this time at Orym’s workshop, fathers’ orders. How was the trip up Bren, any news from the city? She asked sitting down next to him putting her feet up the cart in front of her. nothing changed so far, as they started their usual conversation for the next 2 hours of travel.
After buying almost everything at Brevatto’s they arrived at Orym’s
workshop It was filled with knick knacks all around but Orym nowhere to be seen.
Until his high voice filled the room.
Good afternoon Luna, how wonderful to
see you. How are you on this grey day, filled with rain and rumble.
Orym
stepped out from behind a work bench, he was a small and fragile old man but
the best craftsman the city had. There was nothing that Luna could think of
that Orym couldn’t fix.
I am fine Orym, here for some new clean buckets and maybe one of your new findings of your trips to the beaches.? if change would come from somewhere in the
city, it’ll probably be Orym. His night trips to the beach turned up with quite
some interesting items sometimes.
Well maybe you have more luck than I do. Orym was holding what seemed to be a simple box in his hands. A box as small as a newborn baby. No lid or hinge visible, no lock and key, no dent or scratch on it. It seems to be covered with some weird coating. The faintest bit of blue colouration seemed to be emanating from the box.
What did you find Orym? and what's with the blue light coming from it? She asked as she accepted the box when Orym
reached out to give it to her.
Well, that’s for you to
figure out, seemed to me it was a chest of some kind but there is no keyhole. I found some other things but I'll give them to the guards, can't let them have all the fun though right? Orym gave her a quick wink before heading into the backroom
Luna
turned it over in her hands, nothing that indicates to be an opening anywhere. Maybe with one of the scalpels at home I can manage to find a niche.
Your buckets Miss Luna he said after coming back from the backroom. Say hi to your parents, hopefully Captain Kento has a speedy recovery. Thank you Orym, also for the box, the distraction will help me. I hope you have a wonderfull night.
Then with all supplies on the cart and the sun setting, they headed back home.
After helping Bren unload the supplies Luna went to her bedroom. An empty room, only her bed, a desk with a single drawer and a sink for cleaning. She grabbed her scalpel from underneath her desk and walked to the window. Looking for any spot she could get her scalpel in between. She even started scratching the box, but nothing left any marks behind, It seemed this blue colouration was protecting it somehow.
She sat down staring into the night watching the lightning hit the water.
The Wall of Lightning, such a wonderful sight, and also, the most terrifying thing she has ever seen at the same time. There must be more in this world, more then just follow your parents’ dreams. What about my dreams? Travel the world, make friends. Those are dreams worth living for. Dreams that can come true, only if I can get off this godforsaken island. She put the box under her bed and put the scalpel back in its place, she puts her head on her pillow and listened to the lightning strikes far away, echoing over the water.
No changes so far.
