"Find a horizontal surface - a table, a desk, a section of countertop - and designate it sacred space. You cannot have anything on this surface unless you are actively engaged with it - sorting the mail, for instance. When you move away from the space, it must be clear."

So suggests Kate Carpenter in her book ENUFF, Eliminate the Needless, Useless, Foolish & Frivolous.

Try it for a week.

Soon you'll come to understand that little flat expanse of nothing is soothing to the soul. You'll start sensing the tremendous healing power of blank space. Space in which to live your life and think your thoughts, free from distraction.

It feels like the physical equivalent of meditation. A little piece of serenity amidst the chaos.

For me, it was the beginning of a life-changing experience.
